J.D., LL.M., CA Bar Pending. Associate Attorney, District of Columbia
A people-first philosophy drives this hard-working, accomplished attorney.
Whether she’s drafting wills and trusts for her clients or maximizing their tax benefits, Cathyana Jean-Baptiste says the most rewarding part of her job is forming bonds with people. In fact, she says that helping people was her main motivation for going to law school. With a long list of professional and academic accomplishments, this personable, experienced estate planning attorney leaves no stone unturned when it comes to making sure her clients meet their goals. From large corporations to individual clients, Cathyana (pronounced “Cathy ana”) treats every case as if it’s the most important one she’s ever handled.
Estate planning allows me to help families plan their futures and grow their generational wealth.
Earning her J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., she was part of the school’s Corporate and Business Law Society and the Black Law Students Association. In addition to her law degree, she also earned an LL.M. in Taxation at Georgetown University Law Center. Before heading north for law school, she was a double major in Political Science and Economics at University of Miami. This was in addition to her minor in Business Administration.
Among her outstanding law school experiences was working as a Dean’s Global Summer Fellow for a judge in Victoria, Australia. She also cites an internship in the Office of Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President as a highlight.
Before joining CunninghamLegal, she worked at prestigious law firms in the Washington D.C. and Orange County, California areas.
Outside of her academic accomplishments, one of her greatest professional achievements is earning a spot on the “Top 40 Under 40 National Black Lawyers” for the last two years.
A True Multi-Tasker
Today, Cathyana has a foot in just about every facet of estate planning, from drafting revocable trusts, powers of attorney, and advance health care directives, to assisting with probate and trust administration. She has served as an advisor to multinational corporations, privately held companies, and partnerships on the tax aspects of structuring and executing transactions. Her experience also includes interpreting complex legislative and regulatory actions relating to corporate, partnership, and international transactions.
Having an Impact When it Really Counts
If ever there were someone who truly goes the extra mile for their clients, it’s Cathyana. She tells this story:
“A client had terminal cancer and did not have an estate plan in place. Due to his condition and treatments, it was difficult to set a time during the day to draft and go over the documents. I worked around the client’s schedule to draft and complete the documents, whether it was in the middle of night or on a Saturday. We were able to finish and execute his estate plan very quickly and before his condition got worse.”
Aside from her estate planning work, her pro-bono activities include representing low-income clients regarding IRS tax collection and state tax authority procedures.
Outside the Office
When not practicing law, Cathyana says she loves running, dancing, and reading. As she is fluent in both Haitian Creole and speaks basic French, she can do the latter in multiple languages.
